1. And So To Work…

I’m not an organised person at all, so it probably will come as no surprise to those that know me that I only just got my AIDS test done in the last two days. I got my results yesterday which were dispensed from the back of a building in a rather bizarre fashion. I still have no idea whether or not I have AIDS or not as my Arabic is rather limited and deciphering the results letter would take too much time, but I guess I don’t as I haven’t been deported from the country, which is apparently what would happen if I did…

The AIDS test was one of the steps I have to take to finish my registration on the course, so now that’s all done I can move onto the next step which is getting a recommendation letter from the British Embassy for the university that will cost me around 30GBP, which basically ends up as a letter that says that they don’t give out letters of recommendations… Useful.

It’s great being a guy in Syria as you don’t have loads of people staring at you, which does make me feel sorry for the girls who have the men in the street openly leering at them non stop, however I think most of the guys here on the course feel a sort of responsibility to look after the girls and make sure you walk them to places so they’re not under any unnecessary stress.

I’ve also found out here that they really don’t like Iraqis and Saudis, who apparently really can’t be trusted and who’re extremely rude, and there’s also the Israeli flag that is taped to the floor in Qamaria Street, next to where I’m living, which is there for people to walk over. The Syrians in general are really nice people: I’ve had a free taxi ride, free dessert and free crepes so far, the reason being that they love it if you talk to them in Arabic and try to speak their language!

Just started university yesterday which is challenging, however I’m going to push it this year now I’ve got nothing to distract me. I’m also going to do a colloquial language crash course which lasts a month and will have me speaking like a Syrian in no time! Can’t wait to go travelling and see friends and family at Christmas though.
